TUI targets number of vacation destinations amid travel uncertainty

The UK’s largest tour operator TUI has cut hundreds of vacations to popular destinations due to ‘lingering uncertainty’ over travel rules.

The holidays have been canceled until June 27 because the UK green list for travel without quarantine is not expected to be changed.

The company, which uses a number of Thomas Cook flights, has halted travel to nine destinations, including Turkey, Mexico and Egypt.

He says the reasons for the cancellations are that the few countries are expected to be added to the UK’s green list, which will be reviewed in the coming days.

The other routes affected by the decision are the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Egypt, Cape Verde, Morocco, Tunisia and Bulgaria.

Turkey and Cape Verde are on the UK’s ‘red list’, meaning hotel quarantine is mandatory for travelers once back in the UK.

The other destinations are on the “orange list” while Portugal, including Madeira, as well as Iceland and Gibraltar are the only choices on the “green list”.

TUI resumed flights to many destinations on May 17, but the Foreign Office advised against non-essential travel to all Red List destinations and most Orange destinations except the Canary Islands and some Greek islands.

The company continues to go to the location selected on the “orange list” – subject to the directives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A statement from TUI to Travel Weekly said, “We want to offer our customers flexibility and choice this summer, so where borders are open and FCDO guidance allows travel, we will operate to those destinations as planned.

“We are constantly reviewing our vacation schedule and cancellations in accordance with government updates every three weeks, with the next update due in early June.

“Due to the lingering uncertainty, we unfortunately had to cancel all vacations to the following Red and Amber destinations up to and including June 27: Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Turkey, Egypt, Cape Verde, Morocco, Tunisia and Bulgaria.

“All customers affected by these cancellations will be contacted directly and may request a full cash refund, or move to a later date or other holiday and receive a booking bonus.”
