Adi Elenoa Mara Taito urges Lau residents to do what they can to improve schools on the islands, instead of relying solely on government and other means of support.

In her speech to the Lau Provincial Council, the late Tui Nayau’s daughter, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, called on the Lauans to work together for the improvement of schools.

As the second day of the Provincial Council meeting continued yesterday at Studio 6 Apartments in Suva, Adi Elenoa also called for a collective effort in raising children.

“Let’s not always rely on government support; let’s not wait for help from others,” she said.

It was in response to an item on the agenda tabled at the council meeting concerning school infrastructure on the islands.

Adi Elenoa is the co-patron of the Lau Education Charitable Trust.

She pleaded with district leaders and members of Lau Province who had migrated to Suva not to forget the schools and children returning to the islands.

“I know the lease money is distributed to the islands,” she said.

“I implore you to take the initiative to try to improve the facilities, to look at the needs of schools, teachers and students and meet them.

“We cannot always expect support from the government and other organizations.

“Whatever we can do together, let’s start there.

“I know most of you must have heard that Ratu Finau School was about to close due to OHS measures, teachers’ accommodation and student toilets were not in good condition. .

“I have just one request, please let’s not forget our children in the islands.

“Let’s start with Jerusalem, our island homes and don’t forget our humble beginnings.

“Let’s try to raise the standards for our children.

“Let’s work together as a province with what little we have to make sure our children get the best.
