Namibia: Hosea Kutako airport expansion nears completion



The short-term expansion project to address current congestion and ICAO compliance gaps at Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) is on track for completion, the Namibian airports company said.

While the project is expected to end at the end of September, specialized equipment, such as baggage handling and retrieval, will be commissioned and operational by the end of October 2021.

The expansion project, which started on September 23, 2019, covers areas such as farewell, check-in and restaurant, arrivals and baggage handling, the new departure hall, security and immigration as well. than customs areas. The project also included the expansion of terminal facilities for domestic, VIP and VVIP travel.

The project aims to double the processing capacity of the airport to accommodate increased passenger movements through 2030. These include, but are not limited to, increasing the number of check-in counters at a total of 18 counters with five additional self-service check-ins. kiosks; an increase in departure security checkpoints from two to five, an increase in baggage claim service from two to five, among others.

The project has also enabled an increase in the departure immigration counters from the current three to seven counters, while the departure hall will be expanded to accommodate the increasing movement of passengers at the airport.

On arrival, the new departures hall, an extension of the existing terminal, will also see increased traffic space and 17 immigration counters compared to the current eight, while the baggage claim hall will be enlarged and equipped with three modern carousels, to make them five.

Airlink, FlyWestair, Ethiopian Airlines and Eurowings Discover are currently stopping at HKIA and more and more airlines are expected to return and increase their frequencies.

There are also at least four airlines, including South African Airways (SAA), which have expressed interest in resuming flights to Windhoek, and the Namibia Airports Company said it is currently in talks with them on the terms of restart.
