Since the coronavirus outbreak last year, traveling abroad just hasn’t been the same.

Travel, no matter where you go, is now partly dominated by restrictions from start to finish.

Whether it’s restrictions before you go, like filling out locate forms, in-flight restrictions like wearing face masks, or restrictions once you’re back like quarantine at home for 10 days – the list goes on.

And for some time now, travel has been banned.

When the trip returns on May 17, Covid testing will remain a big part of it.

Under the government’s new three-tier traffic light system, Covid testing is mandatory when traveling to / from a country on the Red, Amber, or Green List.

Not only is the process longer for passengers, it can be costly with tests sometimes costing up to £ 300.

For those traveling to countries on the green list, the restrictions are not as strict as when traveling to orange and red countries.

But all of them require negative Covid tests.

As the government has confirmed that overseas vacations will be allowed from May 17, a number of airlines and businesses have launched discounted test kits to help passengers.

Test kits for some of the major airlines can now be purchased at a reduced price from an incredible £ 20 all the way up to £ 150.

Although the testing rules are different for each level of the traffic light travel system, all returning travelers require at least two coronavirus tests.

However, traveling to an Amber List country requires a minimum of three tests and a fourth can be taken to reduce the quarantine period to five days if negative.

Here’s everything you need to know about testing requirements when traveling and the latest airline deals:

What Covid test do you need to travel?

There are two types of Covid test – a PCR test and a lateral flow test.

The government has not clarified whether the Covid test before departure to your vacation destination should be a PCR or a lateral flow.

But when you return to the UK, you will need to take the PCR test. A list of private coronavirus PCR test providers is available on the government website. Prices range from £ 150 to £ 350 for a test kit.

It is crucial when booking a stay that you take out travel insurance.

The uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic increases the risk of cancellation.

If you’re booking a vacation for 2021, there are steps you can take to make sure your trip is protected.

Making sure your vacation is protected by Atol is the most important step – which often means you will be fully refunded in the event of cancellation or other issues.

Some travel insurance companies only offer quotes to international destinations for travel starting after May 17, 2021.

Confused.com said that if you travel against the advice of the government, you will not be covered by any travel insurance policy you purchase.

However, the insurance operator is offering deals for travelers after May 17 – with the cheapest policy in Europe priced at £ 2.59.

Money supermarket Compare offers from multiple providers and travelers can get a single travel cover from £ 4.71.

Meanwhile, Travel supermarket Compare over 400 policies from over 30 major travel insurance companies with coverage starting at £ 4.70.

Tui will allow you to change your vacation up to 28 days before the vacation.

EasyJet will refund you in full if you simply change your mind about going on vacation, provided you tell them up to 28 days before departure.

The cheapest test kits available are provided by TUI, which range from £ 20 to £ 90 per person depending on your destination.

TUI has partnered with Chronomics to offer its cheaper tests, which will include the cost of shipping and returning the kits.

Four packages will be offered – two for green list destinations, two for orange destinations (the company does not operate trips to red destinations).

  • Green package at £ 20 per person containing 1 x side flow test before departure and 1 PCR test inbound for the second day
  • Green package at £ 60 per person containing 1 x outgoing PCR test with courier costs 7 days per week included, 1 x side flow test before departure and 1 x inbound PCR test for the second day
  • Orange package at £ 50 per person containing 1 x side flow test before departure and 2 x inbound PCR tests for days 2 and 8
  • Orange package at £ 90pp containing 1 x outgoing PCR test with courier costs 7 days a week included, 1 x side flow test before departure and 2 x inbound PCR tests for days 2 and 8

Brits can book their test kits through a dedicated booking center (launched May 10), an hour after booking their vacation.

All they will need is their booking reference, departure date and country of travel.
