Dutch airline KLM to launch direct flights to Mombasa
Dutch national airline KLM has announced plans to launch direct flights to Mombasa from October this year as it seeks to strengthen its presence in East Africa.
The October 31 launch of flights will come just a month after the end of its Africa-Europe joint venture partnership with the national airline Kenya Airways on September 1.
KLM will target leisure travelers to the coastal city with two weekly flights from Amsterdam on Thursdays and Sundays, which include a loop to Nairobi from Mombasa.
“The growing number of tourists visiting Mombasa, not only from Europe but also from the rest of the world, signifies the growing interest in the unique experiences that the coastal city has to offer. KLM comes to deliver a superior and memorable flight experience both for the first time and for regular travelers to East Africa from our hub in Amsterdam. Due to the positive developments regarding the pandemic in various regions, we are seeing an increasing demand for direct flights, ”said Arthur Dieffenthaler, KLM managing director for East Africa.
The launch of direct flights is expected to increase competition for the national national carrier as frequent customers on the route provide more flight options.
The regional aviation scene continues to see an influx of new entrants, especially European carriers, as they vie for a share of the lucrative industry.
Last week, German Lufthansa confirmed that it will begin sightseeing flights to Mombasa on its new leisure carrier Eurowings Discover from July.
KQ said it would cut ties with KLM in December last year as part of a change in strategy.
“This development enables Kenya Airways to offer additional options and amenities to our customers connecting through our European gateways, in line with our goal of supporting the resumption of international tourism in Kenya and connecting Africa to the world and the world. to Africa, ”Kenya said. CEO of Airways, Mr. Allan Kilavuka.
The national carrier serves 10 overseas destinations, including KLM’s main hub at Amsterdam Schipol Airport.
