A peek inside Hull’s first Chinese massage parlor
Located at the end of Spring Bank, around its junction with Beverley Road, is Hull’s first Chinese massage parlour.
Immediately identifiable by its bright green exterior, RenKang Massothérapie offers a range of treatments to soothe body and mind.
Prices range from £30 to £50 and the range of treatments includes a full body massage, deep tissue massage, foot massage and even hot stone sessions.

I headed there to see what the recognizable place looks like inside – and stayed for my very first massage.
When I arrived I was pleased to find that the clinic has an open and airy reception area where clients can wait to receive their treatments.
The reception leads into a hallway, tastefully furnished with traditional Chinese decorations, with the treatment rooms to either side.
I was a bit nervous so was relieved to find that the massage parlor was kept to a very high standard of cleanliness, with hand sanitizer available in every room and staff all wearing masks.
I’ve never had a massage before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Fortunately, inside the treatment rooms, RenKang becomes a much more intimate and relaxing environment.
Far from the clinical lights of the reception, the treatment rooms are lit with soothing pink light to amplify the soothing effects of the treatments.
There was peaceful Chinese music playing in the background, and although it was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, it created a sense of calm in this unassuming massage therapy clinic in the middle of traffic and from the chaos of Hull’s Spring Bank.
The massage itself was a revelation. Not having had one before, I didn’t expect so many elbows to be pressed into my back. It was intense at first, but quickly became relaxing.
There was a weird moment when I almost screamed after a particularly heavy knot was kneaded from my shoulders, but overall the massage was a good thing to check off my to-do list.
RenKang Massage Therapy offers its clients the Chinese Tui Na (pronounced ‘twee-nah’) massage – ‘Tui’ meaning ‘push’ and ‘Na’ meaning ‘grasp’.
They weren’t kidding about the seizure – blimey!
It’s worth being a little uncomfortable though, as Tui Na massage offers a wide range of benefits, both physiological and psychological, increasing well-being and a feeling of deep relaxation.
Tui Na accelerates the body’s ability to heal itself, while being used to treat a variety of ailments including neck pain, migraines, digestive disorders, arthritis and sports injuries.
As someone who exercises a lot, I can definitely say that after the massage my back felt the most flexible in years.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has a stiff back or suffers from any kind of aches or pains, especially those who are gym induced.
The massage relieved a lot of tension and it definitely seemed to speed up my recovery from strength training. Really worth a look!
For those who would like to try RenKang for themselves, the massage parlor is open daily from 9am to 9:30pm.
